About Compete
We started Compete because we wanted a simple answer to a question that had none: where do I actually stand as a player — not within my regular group, but across the city? We built the platform to answer that question, and keep answering it consistently, for every player who shows up.
What we do
Compete organises and runs its own ranked badminton and pickleball tournaments across Chennai. We handle the draw, the fixtures, the officiating, and the results. Players show up, compete under official conditions, and leave with a verified match result that counts toward their skill rating.
Every event on Compete is a Compete event — planned, run, and officiated by us. Every result in the system passed through one of our officials before it counted. Those results update your skill rating and your position on the public leaderboard.
Beyond the competition itself, our events are where players from across the city meet. You might face someone from a court across town, at a level you have never tested yourself against. That is the point — not just to rank you, but to open up who you play with.
The rating system
Every player on Compete has a skill rating. It is calculated using a proprietary algorithm derived from Elo — the same mathematical framework that powers chess ratings, used in competitive games worldwide for decades. We have adapted it for racket sports and the specific dynamics of the Chennai player pool.
Our rating is not DUPR. It is not connected to any federation, external platform, or third-party system. It lives entirely within Compete, reflects only play within our ecosystem, and is maintained by us.
- Only results from Compete-organised, officially-validated events count toward your rating
- Scores are confirmed by a Compete umpire or tournament director — never self-reported
- The algorithm evolves as the player pool grows — we publish release notes when it changes
- New players build their rating progressively through validated results
- Rated players appear on the public leaderboard for their sport and format
The goal is a rating that travels with you. Walk into any court in Chennai, show your Compete rank, and anyone in the system can make a reasonable assessment of your level before you've played a single point.
Ranked and casual tournaments
All Compete tournaments are ranked by default — results count toward player ratings. Some events are explicitly marked as casual, where results have no rating impact and the format is purely for enjoyment.
Who plays on Compete
Compete is built for two kinds of players, and everyone in between.
Beginners wanting structured competitive entry. If you have been playing at your local court for a while and want to know how you actually compare — not against your regular group, but against the city — Compete gives you that. Your first few events establish your baseline. Every event after that refines it.
Club players wanting open competition. If you are an experienced player who has been playing in the same closed group for years and want to test yourself against new opponents, Compete events are open draws. You might face a player you have never met. That result counts, and so does theirs.
In both cases: your rank is yours. It reflects your history of competitive play, evaluated consistently, updated after every event.

Partner courts
Compete works with a select group of partner courts across Chennai — venues we have evaluated and chosen to run events at because they take the quality of play seriously. A partner court is not just a space we book. It is a venue that shares our commitment to providing a consistent, fair environment for competitive sport.
What that means in practice: good court surfaces, proper lighting, adequate space, and management that is invested in the sporting community around them — not just footfall. We do not run events at venues that do not meet this bar.
In return, our partner courts are part of our regular schedule. Events are distributed across the month and across the city — Anna Nagar, T. Nagar, Mylapore, Adyar, Injambakkam, ECR, Velachery, Porur, Kilpauk, and more — so that players across Chennai have events within reach without always travelling to the same venue.
If you manage a badminton or pickleball facility and are interested in becoming a Compete partner court, get in touch.
